I Build Because...

The last year has been, in no uncertain terms, completely unprecedented. As a company we have seen a variety of changes to the way we operate- how we conduct business was heavily impacted. The truly wonderful thing about Airfix is that it’s the beating heart of an incredibly open community. The last year has deprived us of you and vice versa at trade shows, in our HVC and at events.

Thankfully, this isn’t 1918 and we’ve been able to transfer a lot of our communication to Facebook, Instagram, and email. Many of you have found ways to still include us in your Airfix moments over social media and it’s sparked some really interesting exchanges. We’ve had the pleasure of keeping up with your builds and having a front row seat to your projects. So many of you were eager to share your journey with modelling and why you had remained loyal to Airfix throughout the years, and we realised that your stories were too good to just keep to ourselves.

‘I Build Because’ was born from a desire to reconnect with you and showcase the humanity which is at the core of what we do. This last year has been hard on many and it’s been fantastic to see the new wave of modelling hobbyists. However, Airfix has been around for seventy years and has remained a steadfast crutch for a lot of the community throughout their lives, without the added hurdles of 2020.

Discovering this led us to our next question- why?

With permission from all parties involved, we have put together a series of articles, each one dedicated to a member of the modelling community. We have everything from peering back at first builds through rose tinted glasses to dreaming about future projects and a little bit of that thing called life, spliced into the middle. Each article explores the positive impact that modelling has had on the subject and what building uniquely means to them.

We cover a wide range of topics, from mental and physical health, to how people have incorporated their passion for modelling into their day jobs. Written by people of all walks of life, you’ll have an unfiltered and diverse view into their love for the hobby. Underneath each article, we have included a workbench, designed specifically for the subject to display any products that they may have mentioned. For fun, we asked a few build specific questions of each interviewee, and encourage you all to browse their suggestions for future projects.
