1:48 is the scale you graduate to when detail starts to matter more than shelf space. Our 1:48 scale model kits are led by aircraft, half as large again as their 1:72 twins, with helicopters alongside. It's the sweet spot between display size and build time.

The extra size goes exactly where modellers want it: open cockpits, finer surface detail, marks and schemes you can actually do justice to with a brush. Aircraft dominate the range, from Spitfires onward, all of them drawn from the wider aircraft model kits range. A trio of 1:48 helicopters sits alongside, and the Royal Air Force (RAF) has its ground crew set under model figures to populate the apron. Step down to 1:72 for squadrons, up to 1:24 for a single showpiece, or back to Airfix model kits for everything else.

Is 1:48 bigger than 1:72?
Yes, and it trips everyone up once: the smaller the second number, the bigger the model, because it's a fraction of the real thing. A 1:48 kit is one and a half times the size of its 1:72 counterpart, which is where most of its extra detail lives.
Does 1:48 cover more than aircraft?
Mostly aircraft. Alongside the fixed wings sit three 1:48 helicopters, the Westland Lynx and two Sea Kings, and the RAF ground crew set for airfield scenes. For armour in volume, 1:76 is the scale; for ships, it's 1:600.
Are 1:48 model kits harder to build than 1:72?
Not harder, just longer. The parts are bigger and easier to handle, which beginners appreciate, but there tends to be more detail to paint and more of the build to enjoy. Treat 1:48 as the same skill with more room to show it.
