Model figures in 1:32 and 1:76 scale: which to choose?
Scale is the first decision with model figures: get it right and every set matches the vehicles, buildings and railway stock around it. More of our sets come in 1:76 than any other scale because it's the OO gauge standard: the same soldiers can crew a tank model kit, stand on a platform among your 1:76 scale kits, or populate one of our diorama sets. Go up to 1:32 scale when the figures are the display: each figure is more than twice the height, with room for far more painted detail.
Military figures from WW2
The WW2 sets cover both sides and most theatres: British infantry, paratroops and commandos; German infantry, mountain troops and paratroops; US infantry, Marines and paratroops; and the 8th Army and Afrika Corps for the desert war. Aviation modellers get support too, with Royal Air Force (RAF) ground crew and bomber re-supply sets sized to sit beside 1:72 and 1:48 aircraft. Build them into a WW2 model kits scene, or paint them as a project in their own right.
Airfix figures beyond the battlefield
Not all Airfix figures are military. Romans and Ancient Britons refight the invasion of Britain. Robin Hood faces the Sheriff of Nottingham, with a Sherwood Castle set to storm. And the Guards Band and Guards Colour Party bring the ceremonial side of soldiering to a layout.

Mainly 1:32 and 1:76. The 1:76 sets are the larger part of the range and match OO gauge railways; the 1:32 sets are the big, paintable display figures. A few specialist sets sit outside the pair: RAF ground crew in 1:48 and bomber re-supply sets in 1:72, made to match their aircraft.
Do Airfix figures come painted?
No, figures are supplied unpainted, and painting them is half the hobby. Humbrol acrylic paint is the easiest place to start: it's water-based and cleans up with nothing more than water. Add a set of modelling brushes and work from the large areas down to the details.
Can you use model soldiers for wargaming?
Yes. The 1:76 sets suit mass battles, where you need numbers and table space on your side, and share a scale with most of the armour, so infantry and tanks fight over the same ground. 1:32 suits skirmish games in which every figure is an individual.
