Spitfire plastic model kits by scale

Three scales carry the Supermarine legend. 1:72 is the fast route in, starter set included; 1:48 is where most of the marks live, with the room for cockpit and surface detail the subject deserves; and the 1:24 scale Mk.IXc is the flagship build of the whole Airfix catalogue. Whichever you choose, there's a squadron waiting for it under aircraft model kits.

Which Spitfire model kits can you build?

The range runs from the Battle of Britain era to the end of the piston age: the Mk.I, Mk.Ia, Mk.Vb and Mk.Vc, the Mk.IXc and Mk.IXe, the late F Mk.XVIII, the photo-reconnaissance PR.XIX and the two-seat Tr.9 trainer. Every one is a different answer to the same question; that's the charm of collecting Spitfires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a 1:24 scale Spitfire?

Yes: the Mk.IXc, and it's the biggest Spitfire Airfix makes. At 1:24 scale every panel, rivet and cockpit fitting earns its place, so treat it as a project rather than a weekend. If you're not ready to commit, there's a Scale Up bundle built around the same kit.

Is there an Airfix Spitfire starter set?

Yes, the Mk.Vc in 1:72: everything a first build needs comes in the box, down to the brushes, and it carries a skill level of 1, the lowest rating Airfix gives. When it goes well, the starter sets page holds its stablemates.

Can you build the Airfix Spitfire alongside its rivals?

That's the point of the bundles: a Dogfight Double pairs the Mk.Vc with the Messerschmitt Bf109F-4, and Then and Now puts the Spitfire beside the F-35B Lightning II. For the other side of the story, the Luftwaffe model kits page covers the opposition, and WW2 model kits the whole war. Everything else starts at model kits.
