Nicky Builds Because...

In a change of pace, this week we had the pleasure of chatting to a young man who came to the hobby as an adult, with no prior knowledge or experience in modelling before. We sat down with Nicky, a 31-year-old ex-infantry soldier, who turned to building in a bid to reclaim his mental health.

We would like to add a warning to our readers this week before launching into the article. Nicky has been incredibly open and honest in the hope that his words might resonate with some of you. However, we tackle some difficult topics and if talking openly about mental health isn’t for you, then check back next week instead!

At 16, Nicky joined the army. Most kids at Nicky’s age were sitting their exams and wondering whether they would go to college or enter the world of work, Nicky was in basic training, preparing to say goodbye to his childhood in a very different way. He served all over the world, visiting new countries and sampling cultures. His military career lasted seven years, coming to an end when he decided it was time to come home and start a family.

However, as Nicky attempted to readjust to life outside of the army, he found himself struggling. “I joined the army at 16, served all over the world and left 7 years later and it is then when my mental health issues began. I was severely depressed and began to drink a lot.”

This is unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence, after a career of fast-paced action, a lot of ex-military individuals find it difficult to return back to the lives they had before. Nicky joined at such a young age and spent a large part of his formative years doing things that most of us could never imagine. Adapting to what is considered “normal life” for many of us, has proved to be an exceptional challenge.

Nicky goes on to explain how, after grappling with his own mental health for so long, it culminated in Nicky attempting to take his own life. It was at the hospital that he was eventually diagnosed with severe trauma-based depression and anxiety. However, giving his battle a name didn’t lessen the pain he was feeling. Nicky needed to find a way to channel his demons into something positive.

“A few years later I became a prison officer. About 2 years in, I had another serious mental health breakdown and one of my colleagues Liam, suggested I give model building a go to keep my mind occupied. So, I bought my first ever model kit. An Airfix 1:72 spitfire- I’ve been hooked ever since. My spitfire has since fallen victim to my 2 boys as well as many of my other models!"

“I find building models really helps with keeping my mind occupied and gives me a pride in what I have done. I urge anyone who feels the effects of mental health to give it a go, or if anyone who knows anyone who is suffering to suggest it to them.”

Like many of us, Nicky has found solace in modelling. For him, it’s a way to keep his mind from straying too far and his hands busy with a build. We’ve found that for parents, it’s also a great way to reclaim some much needed 'you time'!

Nicky also goes on to tell us about how he is now making his own recommendations, after having found so much success the effect modelling has had on his mental health. He’s eager to spread the message about the hobby that has had such a positive impact on his life.

“One of my close friends and colleagues has recently been violently attacked and already suffers, so I bought him his 1st ever kit. An Airfix 1:72 spitfire starter kit, the very same one I first had, hopefully it will help him as it has helped me.”

Nicky would also like to thank Airfix, his friend Liam, his two boys and his amazing partner Amy. We want to thank Nicky for his time and openness in sharing his story with all of us. By being so vulnerable, Nicky is lighting the way for everyone in the modelling community to follow suit. Together, we can remove the stigma which surrounds mental health!

We have included some of the products Nicky mentioned in his article so that if anyone comes to mind who you think would benefit from a bit of Airfix TLC, you can share this with them and recreate some of Nicky's favourite builds.

Models for Heroes

Nicky wanted to take this opportunity to mention a very worthy charity, which has helped many ex-military people by introducing them to the world of modelling.

Models for Heroes is a not-for-profit organisation, designed to aid veterans. Models for Heroes (M4H) is the first charitable organisation in the UK to support the use of model making hobbies within former and current Armed Forces and Emergency Service Personnel in the United Kingdom. On average, they help around 400 veterans a month, by supplying them with kits to build. The founder of M4H, Malcolm Childs believes that the constant sacrifices made by serving friends, family and complete strangers to protect his own young family needed to be repaid in whichever way he knew how.  Being a keen model maker himself and witnessing the curative effects of the hobby.  Malcolm took it upon himself to start Models for Heroes. They’re a fantastic charity who we have worked with for years, thanks to our beloved late Brand Manager, Darrell Burge’s passion for using our Airfix kits for good.

If you are moved to do so, you can donate to Models for Heroes here or volunteer your time here.

Share the love

Over the course of the next few weeks we will see a diverse range of stories, some focussing on highs and others on lows- with struggles and triumphs of all kinds in between. If you read about Nicky's journey and someone in your life comes to mind as having a similar story (or you think they might just benefit from a touch of the Airfix TLC!), we hope you'll share this with them. The positive impact modelling can have on a life is limitless but we need your help to ensure that our reach extends just as far.

Can you relate?

Like with all stories we have themes of light and dark, good times and the occasional bad. Although each of our articles ends with a light at the end of the tunnel we also know that it doesn't always feel like that. Many of you are reading the series just to further your love of modelling, but if you find yourself mirrored in any of our stories and feel like you need to reach out to someone, you can find a list of NHS endorsed resources here.
