De Filippis' was born on November 11th, 1926, in Marigliano, Italy in the surroundings of the 16th-century Palazzo Marigliano in Naples, which provided her with a taste for adventure. Despite encountering scepticism from her inner circle, including doubting brothers who made a bet that she wouldn't be fast enough, Maria Teresa de Filippis embarked on her racing journey at the age of 22. Her debut victory in a Fiat 500 on a challenging 10 km stretch between Salerno and Cava de' Tirreni served as a testament to her talent and determination. Encouraged by this early success, she ventured into the Italian sports car championship, where she finished an impressive second in the 1954 season.
