Ready for take off! Limited Edition Blackpool Illuminations Spitfire

This unique collector’s item has been received with applaud from the modelling community.

Airfix released a new bespoke Spitfire kit based on the spectacular light installation in this year’s Blackpool Illuminations

The 1:72 scale model of a Spitfire, complete with a bespoke Blackpool livery on its fuselage, is part of a special collaboration between Airfix and Visit Blackpool.

Built by the Blackpool Illuminations team using 3D printing technology for the first time, in collaboration with designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, the Spitfire Island installation is located on Gynn Roundabout in the midst of the six-mile seafront display.

Cllr Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council said, “The installation is a stunning piece of work that is a deserving tribute to an important part of Blackpool’s history.”

Gone are the days of the solo Spitfire; say hello to the mesmerizing three - Progress I, II, and III! These aren’t just any replicas – they echo the valour of Spitfires that were based at Blackpool Airport during WWII. Thanks to the Hangar 42 Spitfire Visitor Centre for their invaluable historical insights that was crucial to the construction of the Spitfires.

The installation will shine nightly until January 1, 2024 as part of this years Blackpool illuminations.
