History
During World War II, the risk of losing numerous aircrew forced to abandon their aircraft in the waters surrounding the British Isles was significant, prompting the establishment of the Royal Air Force Sea Rescue Service, which operated under the motto 'The sea shall not have them'.
Utilising vessels crafted by the British Powerboat Company and incorporating racing boat technology, this service prioritised speed, with the Type Two 63ft HSL 'Whaleback' being one of their most notable crafts.
Driven by three 24-litre Napier Sea Lion engines, these boats must have produced an impressive sound, earning them the nickname 'Spitfires of the sea'.
