History
Although pilots often receive the most recognition for defending the UK from the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain in the late summer of 1940, they could not have succeeded without support. Numerous men and women from across the UK served as ground crew, undertaking essential tasks like refuelling, rearming, and maintaining fighter planes between missions. These duties were especially dangerous during Luftwaffe assaults and surprise attacks on RAF bases. Besides refuelling and rearming Spitfires and Hurricanes with thousands of .303 rounds, these dedicated individuals also repaired damaged aircraft, started engines before missions, and assisted pilots amidst the battle's chaos. Bombing raids and strafing attacks resulted in many casualties and injuries among the ground crew, yet they persevered throughout the battle and the rest of the war, often working in extreme weather conditions to ensure the RAF could protect Britain's skies.
