History
Airfix was founded in 1939 by Nicholas Kove, and released its first plastic kit, a 1:20 scale Ferguson tractor, in 1949. The Golden Hind followed in 1952 as the first construction kit proper, sold through Woolworths, with the first Spitfire kit arriving a year later. The paintings that sold those kits became famous in their own right. Roy Cross, who began painting for Airfix in 1964, produced the box art that generations of modellers remember, and nine of the twelve works in this calendar are his, painted between 1964 and 1970. The other three are by Adam Tooby, whose digital artwork carries the same tradition on today’s boxes. Fittingly, December’s painting is the Golden Hind, the kit that started it all.
