History

During the crucible of World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) undertook one of the most audacious aerial strategies of the conflict: daylight precision bombing raids deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. Flying in tight formations of B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators, these aircrews braved flak-filled skies, enemy fighters, and the bitter cold at 25,000 feet to strike at the industrial heart of the Third Reich.

Unlike the Royal Air Force's nighttime area bombing campaigns, the USAAF committed to daylight missions, aiming to cripple German factories, oil refineries, rail yards, and military installations with pinpoint accuracy. The cost was staggering. Early missions, particularly before long-range fighter escorts like the P-51 Mustang arrived, suffered devastating losses—sometimes as high as 20% in a single raid.

Yet the bombers kept flying. Driven by duty and resolve, crews endured repeated missions knowing each could be their last. Their bravery laid the groundwork for the Allied air superiority that would become decisive by 1944, paving the way for D-Day and the liberation of Europe.

History

The Boeing B-17 'Flying Fortress' is renowned for its significant role as a strategic weapon and a lasting emblem of American air strength during WWII. Conceived as a large bomber with multiple engines and robust defensive capabilities, the B-17 was first introduced in 1938. Its initial combat deployment with the RAF in 1941 involved bombing missions over France, where it became clear that enhancements in defence and bombing precision were necessary. Subsequent versions, such as the B-17G, proved more effective, evolving into formidable strategic assets capable of executing high-altitude, long-distance missions. Despite its strong defensive armament, B-17s were still vulnerable to enemy fighter attacks.

Focke-Wulf Fw190A-8/F-8

Product code: A02066A

This detailed 1:72 scale model of the Focke-Wulf Fw190A-8/F-8 allows enthusiasts to recreate one of the Luftwaffe's most powerful World War Two aircraft. Comprising 74 parts and featuring a wingspan of 145mm, this Skill Level 1 kit is perfect for beginners aged 8 and up. It includes two genuine paint schemes, enabling you to depict either the heavily armed A-8 interceptor or the F-8 ground-attack variant.

Key Features

  • 1:72 scale plastic model kit with 74 parts
  • Two paint scheme options for A-8 or F-8 variants
  • Skill Level 1 - suitable for novice modellers aged 8+
  • Finished wingspan of 145mm
  • Accurate representation of a World War Two Luftwaffe fighter
  • Choice to assemble as an interceptor or ground-attack version

History

First taking to the skies in 1939, the Focke-Wulf FW190 posed a significant challenge to RAF fighters upon its introduction in late 1941, being both faster and more agile than the Spitfire V at that time.

The F-8 was designed for ground attacks and was distinct mainly due to the absence of outboard cannons. It could carry various underwing armaments, most commonly featuring a central bomb and four smaller bombs on the wings.

The A-8 model was the most produced and heavily armed version, entering service in 1944 to counter Allied daylight bombing raids. However, by this time, newer Allied fighters had started to surpass it.

The kit comprises four unique vehicles: the Autocar U-7144-T 4x4 tractor unit paired with the F-1 fuel trailer, the Chevrolet M6 bomb service truck with the M5 bomb trailer, and the Cushman Model 39 Package Car. With 200 components and a skill level of 2, this set enables modellers to construct a realistic airfield resupply scene, supporting the Eighth Air Force's Liberators and Flying Fortresses.

Key Features

  • Four distinct vehicle types, including tractor units, service trucks, and utility vehicles
  • Autocar U-7144-T 4x4 tractor unit with F-1 fuel trailer for aircraft refuelling tasks
  • Chevrolet M6 bomb service truck with M5 bomb trailer for ordnance transport
  • Cushman Model 39 three-wheeled Package Car for light transport duties
  • 200 parts facilitating detailed assembly of complete airfield support equipment
  • 1:72 scale compatible with Airfix bomber aircraft models
  • Suitable for modellers aged 8 and above with a skill level 2 rating
  • Authentic markings depicting USAAF ground support activities in Britain

History

In the summer of 1942, as US bomber missions commenced at airfields throughout Southern England, the support vehicles servicing their Liberators and Flying Fortresses transitioned from standard RAF equipment to specialised US Air Force machinery. Fuel trailers and bomb trolleys saw Bedfords swiftly replaced by Chevrolets.

The Autocar U-7144-T 4x4 tractor unit, along with the F-1 fuel trailer, was widely utilised by the US military from 1942 onwards, appearing on nearly all USAAF airfields in Britain. With the frequent refuelling needs of aircraft, it was common for bases to maintain several U-7144-T units at any given time, ensuring the bomber groups remained operationally ready.

The Chevrolet M6 bomb service truck played a vital role in the daily operations of USAAF bomber squadrons. This versatile 4x4 truck could carry a limited number of bombs independently but was more often used with the M5 bomb trailer. It could tow up to five fully loaded M5 bomb trailers, a necessity given the numerous missions USAAF crews undertook during the strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe.

The Cushman Model 39 Package Car offered an innovative solution for light transport tasks across extensive airfield complexes. This lightweight, three-wheeled utility vehicle was employed for various duties on USAAF bases. Evolving from a motor scooter design, its rear single wheel powered the vehicle, allowing a small cargo box to be mounted at the front. The Cushman was a common sight on USAAF airfields, zipping between dispersals, maintenance hangars, and administrative buildings.

Together, these vehicles constituted the vital ground support infrastructure that sustained America's formidable bomber offensive, maintaining peak efficiency throughout the campaign to liberate Europe.
