Product Info

As one of the most powerful warships the world had ever seen, the mighty German battleship Bismarck posed a significant threat to British convoys and naval units alike during the Second World War, a threat which simply had to be neutralised. This became an even greater priority following the devastating loss of HMS Hood on 24th May 1941, a warship which was not only the pride of the Royal Navy, but also of the British nation.

This latest kit bundle offering presents not only the mighty Bismarck, but also some of the British naval forces sent to challenge and ultimately destroy her, from the ill-fated HMS Hood, to the outdated Fairey Swordfish biplanes which ultimately sealed the Bismarck’s fate. Making for a fitting scale modelling tribute to one of the most famous periods of the war at sea during the Second World War, this latest bundle is available now.

History

Launched from the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammel Laird on 13th April 1937, HMS Ark Royal emerged as one of the Royal Navy's most illustrious aircraft carriers during the Second World War. This formidable vessel was instrumental in several naval engagements, notably aiding in the pursuit and destruction of the German Battleship Bismarck in May 1941.

The service of HMS Ark Royal concluded when she was struck by a torpedo from the German Submarine U-81 in the Mediterranean. Despite rescue efforts, she sank at 06:13 hours on 14th November 1941. Remarkably, only one crew member perished in the incident, highlighting the crew's commitment and camaraderie.

The original tooling and artwork reflect the essence of Airfix's golden age of model crafting, providing both historical accuracy and a sense of nostalgia.

History

HMS Hood was the largest warship globally when she was launched in 1918, serving as a symbol of British naval strength and the pride of the Royal Navy. Her impressive size and graceful design earned her the nickname "the Mighty Hood" during her goodwill tours around the world.

In May 1941, Hood was tasked with intercepting the German battleship Bismarck as it attempted to break into the Atlantic. Alongside HMS Prince of Wales, she moved swiftly to engage the enemy. Upon encountering Bismarck, both British ships commenced firing in what would become one of the most dramatic naval battles of the Second World War.

Bismarck's return fire was devastatingly precise. Her fifth salvo delivered a fatal strike, likely igniting one of Hood's magazines, causing the ship to sink in a mere two minutes. Out of her 1,500 crew members, only three survived. The sinking of HMS Hood was a profound shock to Britain and the world, spurring the Royal Navy to pursue and ultimately sink the Bismarck just three days later.

History

In 1941, the Bismarck was the most formidable battleship globally when she embarked on a mission to disrupt Allied shipping in the North Atlantic, accompanied by the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After being detected by the Royal Navy, she was tracked and subsequently engaged. During this confrontation, the Bismarck destroyed HMS Hood. She was later hit by at least one torpedo from Swordfish aircraft, which reduced her speed. Ultimately, she was sunk by torpedoes from Royal Navy vessels, resulting in the loss of nearly 1,900 crew members.

Part of Airfix's esteemed Vintage Classics collection, this Bismarck model is a significant piece in the history of warship modelling. The Vintage Ships range honours iconic naval vessels that have fascinated modellers for years, allowing enthusiasts to recreate one of the most dramatic naval encounters of the Second World War. From her short but impactful mission in the Atlantic to her final battle with the Royal Navy, the Bismarck remains one of the most analysed and modelled warships ever.

This kit offers a fantastic chance to hone your modelling skills while constructing a vessel of historical importance. The 170-piece assembly provides a detailed depiction of the Bismarck's impressive superstructure, main gun turrets, and secondary armament, capturing the intimidating silhouette that made her a formidable adversary on the seas.
