History
Renowned as one of the most unique military vehicles in British service, the Alvis Stalwart was a proficient amphibious 6x6 cargo truck, designed to supply Army units with fuel, ammunition, and general provisions during warfare.
Initially conceived as a private initiative, the Stalwart's lineage can be traced back through a series of successful 6x6 vehicles, many of which served the British military, such as the Saladin armoured car and Saracen armoured personnel carrier. While sharing numerous components with its predecessors, the Stalwart was tasked with a distinct mission.
Entering service from 1966 onwards, the Stalwart truly lived up to its name, with its remarkable off-road capabilities earning it a reputation for being unstoppable. Equipped with a sophisticated drive and suspension system, the Stalwart provided its crew with a smooth ride over rough terrain.
Despite being able to reach nearly 40mph on open roads, controlling the Stalwart could be difficult, as each set of wheels constantly attempted to outpace the others.
As a genuine amphibian, the Stalwart featured watertight seals to safeguard all essential components, allowing it to transport cargo across water bodies lacking bridges or temporary crossings, emerging on the other side if the ground was firm enough to support its weight.
In aquatic conditions, the Stalwart Mk.2 was equipped with enhanced waterjet propulsion, achieving speeds of up to 16km/h under optimal conditions.
