History

With its roots in the renowned Lancaster from the Second World War, the Avro Shackleton was a long-distance maritime patrol aircraft primarily engaged in anti-submarine warfare, although it was tasked with various other duties as well. Introduced into RAF service in 1951, most Shackletons were equipped with the powerful Rolls Royce Griffon engine, marking the end of the era for four-engined propeller-driven bomber/strike aircraft in the Royal Air Force.

The decommissioning of HMS Ark Royal raised concerns within the Royal Navy about losing crucial airborne early warning capabilities. However, a plan to install radar systems from the Ark Royal’s former AEW Fairey Gannets onto RAF Avro Shackletons alleviated these concerns. Twelve Shackleton airframes were modified to the AEW Mk.2 standard and flew with No.8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, remaining in service until the squadron was disbanded in 1991.
