History
In the early hours of June 6th 1944, the Allied forces launched a massive assault on the Normandy beaches in Northern France, marking a pivotal moment in the Second World War. As airborne units engaged on the ground, the naval forces began their landing. This segment of the operation, known as Neptune, involved five invasion beaches: three British and Canadian (Sword, Gold, and Juno) and two American (Omaha and Utah). The landings were preceded by a significant air assault and a powerful naval artillery barrage from a large fleet stationed offshore.
Most beaches were captured with casualties, but without severe losses, except at Omaha where American forces were initially held back due to the ineffective naval bombardment against German defences. Nevertheless, this challenge was eventually overcome, and once the beach-heads were secured, Allied troops and equipment were swiftly brought ashore, ready to advance and liberate the occupied nations of Western Europe and ultimately defeat Germany to win the war.
