History
As the UK prepared to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 2015, an aircraft reveal at RAF Coningsby captivated enthusiasts and modellers alike. One of the RAF's advanced Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 jets was unveiled with a striking new paint job, inspired by a renowned Fighter Command aircraft from 1940.
This sophisticated multi-role jet was adorned with a paint scheme reminiscent of the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I piloted by Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson on 16th August 1940, the day his valiant actions in battle earned him a Victoria Cross - the sole VC awarded to a Fighter Command pilot throughout the war.
Nicolson's Hurricane from RAF No.249 Squadron caught fire after an attack by a Messerschmitt Bf 109, yet he remained in the cockpit to pursue an attack on a Bf 110 'Destroyer' that crossed his path, even as flames surrounded him. Nicolson eventually parachuted to safety and returned to flying after a period of recovery.
Displaying the typically grey Eurofighter Typhoon in Battle of Britain era camouflage was a brilliant move by the RAF, and during the summer display season, it became the most admired aircraft in the Royal Air Force fleet. Enthusiasts affectionately named it 'GINA', after the fuselage code letters, and it remains one of the most visually appealing Typhoon jets in RAF history.
Now you can construct 'GINA' and the aircraft that inspired its design in 1:72 scale, offering endless modelling enjoyment.
