History
The Gloster Gladiator, evolving from the Gloster Gauntlet as a private initiative, marked both the zenith and conclusion of the biplane fighter era. It facilitated the shift to monoplane fighters in numerous air forces, and when matched against contemporaneous aircraft, it performed admirably.
The Gladiator took its maiden flight in September 1934 and joined the RAF in February 1937, becoming the last biplane fighter in Royal Air Force service. Although surpassed by the newer monoplane fighters of the late 1930s, the Gladiator was actively involved in combat during the early stages of the Second World War.
Gladiators were deployed in various war theatres, serving with the RAF and several foreign air forces. Notably, three aircraft, named Faith, Hope, and Charity, gained fame for their role in defending Malta in 1940. While symbolising the end of an era in fighter design, the Gladiator's sturdy build and manoeuvrability made it a formidable opponent against aircraft of its time.
