Initially taking to the skies in 1935, the Heinkel He111 was presented as a rapid transport aircraft due to Germany's restrictions on bomber production under the Treaty of Versailles. Its true function was revealed when it was deployed as a bomber in the Spanish Civil War. Early versions demonstrated their effectiveness as swift bombers, with minimal losses to enemy forces.

History

At the onset of the Second World War, the He111 had been significantly modified, resulting in the P variant. It was equipped with more robust Daimler Benz DB601 engines, and featured an expanded glass nose section that accommodated most of the crew, providing excellent visibility but also increased vulnerability.

During the Battle of Britain, the P variant was gradually being replaced, yet it still saw considerable use. The He111 struggled against the advanced RAF fighters due to its insufficient speed and defensive weaponry. Before transitioning to nocturnal operations, the He111 was a mainstay of the Luftwaffe's bomber fleet, though it incurred substantial losses.
