History

The Westland Lysander was a unique British aircraft from the Second World War, intended for army cooperation and liaison roles. Known for its remarkable short take-off and landing abilities, fixed spatted undercarriage, and high-mounted wing, the Lysander gained fame for its secretive missions, notably deploying and retrieving agents behind enemy lines in occupied France. The Mk.I was introduced in 1938 with the Bristol Mercury XII engine, while the Mk.III, featuring the more powerful Mercury XX or XXX engine, became the most produced version. Throughout the war, Lysanders were active in various theatres, from early operations in France to North Africa and the Far East, but they are most celebrated for their daring night-time missions with the Special Operations Executive, landing in small fields guided only by torches to deliver and extract secret agents collaborating with the French Resistance.
