History

The aircraft that participated in the Battle of Britain were slated for major upgrades, but during this development phase, the Luftwaffe introduced a new Bf 109 variant that was effectively downing Spitfires in significant numbers, necessitating immediate action.

The Spitfire Mk.V was essentially an enhanced Mk.II airframe, equipped with the latest Merlin engine, which improved its high-altitude capabilities. This variant eventually served over 140 RAF Squadrons. As a pivotal advancement in the Spitfire's wartime role, the Mk.V was initially a temporary fix that proved so effective it became one of the most extensively produced versions of this iconic aircraft.

With its improved performance, the Spitfire Mk.Vc was able to effectively challenge the Luftwaffe's advanced fighters, ensuring RAF dominance in various operational theatres during the Second World War.
