History
Leading the way in helicopter innovation in the post-war period, the US Sikorsky Company was contracted in 1957 to create an all-weather amphibious helicopter for the US Navy. Initially designed for anti-submarine warfare to protect the fleet, it adapted to various roles, becoming one of the 20th Century's iconic aircraft. Named SH-3 Sea King, it was equipped with an amphibious hull for water and ship deck landings. With twin turboshaft engines, it could transport personnel, equipment, or supplies, providing the Navy with a groundbreaking aircraft. Entering service in 1961, the Sea King was the most advanced of its kind, offering a versatile aviation platform.
In the UK, a licensing agreement between Westland Helicopters and Sikorsky was expanded to include the SH-3 Sea King shortly after the prototype's initial flight, recognising its potential. Westland-produced Sea Kings retained the classic lines of the US design but included numerous internal changes for British military needs. The Royal Navy chose the Westland Sea King to replace the Westland Wessex in anti-submarine warfare, placing an order for 60 aircraft in 1966. The first Westland-manufactured Sea King HAS.1 took flight from Yeovil on 7 May 1969, with deliveries to No.700 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton later that year.
The Sea King quickly demonstrated its operational capability and adaptability, enjoying a lengthy career with both the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Air Force. Excelling in every assigned role, it became especially cherished as a Search & Rescue helicopter, making it one of the most successful British military aircraft of the post-war era.

History
The 'Commando' variant of the Sea King was specifically designed for amphibious warfare and tactical troop deployment. Initially suggested as a tactical transport for the Egyptian Air Force, it did not require the amphibious features of previous Sea Kings, leading to the removal of side floats. Featuring folding rotors and tail, the Commando was introduced into the Royal Navy as the Sea King HC.4. It was later equipped with radar-warning and infrared jamming systems and could release M130/M147 flares as countermeasures. In addition to transporting troops, it could carry underslung loads up to 2.5 tonnes.
With an extended range and capacity to carry 28 troops, it was perfect for amphibious transport duties. The HC.4 was actively used in conflicts in the Falklands, Balkans, Gulf, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. It frequently undertook missions to evacuate injured personnel and refugees, as well as supporting and preparing for ground operations. It was scheduled for retirement from UK Forces service in March 2016.

History
The introduction of the Sea King HAR.3 marked a notable enhancement in RAF Search and Rescue operations when it was deployed in 1978. Created to replace the outdated Westland Whirlwind HAR.10, this adapted version of the Westland Sea King quickly demonstrated its effectiveness in challenging SAR missions. The typical SAR crew consists of two pilots, a radar and winch operator, and a winchman/paramedic, facilitating well-coordinated rescue efforts in difficult conditions.
After its debut in RAF service in 1982, the Sea King HAR.3's reputation for dependability and performance led to international orders, with Westland producing models for the Royal Norwegian Air Force, Belgian Air Force, and German Navy. The 1992 enhancement programme introduced six HAR.3As with digital navigation systems and upgraded avionics, keeping the model at the cutting edge of SAR technology. Throughout its operational life, the HAR.3 offered unwavering SAR coverage across the UK and as far as the Falkland Islands, saving numerous lives during its esteemed service before retiring from RAF duty in 2016.
