History

The Lysander was one of the more distinctive aircraft used during the Second World War, designed to give the British Army a modern solution for reconnaissance, observation, and artillery spotting. Its remarkable short take-off and landing abilities made it an ideal choice for the Army's needs.

Regrettably, many design elements were based on outdated concepts. Out of 175 Lysanders deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force, 118 were lost, as the aircraft struggled to defend itself against Luftwaffe fighters.

Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB

Product code: A02041B

This 1:72 scale replica of the Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB represents one of the RAF's most effective ground attack aircraft from the Second World War. Comprising 74 pieces and rated at skill level 1, this kit is ideal for young modellers aged 8 and up, showcasing a wingspan of 174mm upon completion. By 1943, the RAF required a specialised ground attack fighter, and the Typhoon was well-suited for this mission. Its robust engine enabled it to carry a payload of up to two 1,000lb (454kg) bombs. Starting in September 1943, Typhoons were also equipped with four, eight, or occasionally 12 "60lb" RP-3 rockets. The kit offers markings for two distinct paint schemes, allowing for the creation of authentic D-Day era Typhoons.

Key Features

  • 1:72 scale model with 174mm wingspan
  • 74 pieces designed for skill level 1 modellers
  • Suitable for ages 8 and above
  • Two authentic aircraft paint schemes included
  • Recreates the powerful ground attack variant capable of carrying bombs and rockets

History

The Hawker Typhoon became one of the Second World War's most potent ground attack aircraft. Initially designed as an interceptor, it excelled in low-altitude ground attack roles, where its strong engine and durable build were highly effective.

By 1943, the RAF sought a dedicated ground attack fighter, and the Typhoon was ideally suited for this purpose. Its powerful engine allowed it to carry a substantial armament load of up to two 1,000lb (454kg) bombs. From September 1943, Typhoons were also equipped with four, eight, or sometimes 12 "60lb" RP-3 rockets, turning them into formidable tank destroyers and ground attack platforms.

The Typhoon's weaponry made it a formidable force against enemy ground targets. The combination of bombs and rockets enabled Typhoon squadrons to effectively target everything from armoured vehicles to fortified positions. During the D-Day landings and subsequent operations in Northwest Europe, Typhoon squadrons provided vital close air support to Allied forces, striking enemy positions and disrupting German movements.

The aircraft's reputation grew during the campaign in France and the Low Countries, where it played a crucial role in supporting the Allied advance. Typhoon pilots conducted numerous sorties against enemy ground targets, and the aircraft became a key component of the RAF's tactical air power during the final year of the war in Europe.

Characterised by its fully glazed nose and large, elliptical wings, the H-6 model was the most widely produced variant, participating in every theatre of the war in roles such as bombing, torpedo-bombing, mine-laying, and reconnaissance. Due to the absence of a suitable successor, these aircraft continued to be used until the war's conclusion.

Austin K2/Y Ambulance

Product code: A1375

This remarkable 1:35 scale model kit of the Austin K2/Y Ambulance captures one of the most vital military vehicles from the Second World War. Comprising 146 pieces and rated at skill level 3, this intricate set offers modellers the chance to recreate this legendary ambulance with four distinct paint scheme options, reflecting its service with British and Commonwealth forces in various operational theatres.

Key Features

  • 1:35 scale model featuring 146 parts for a detailed and engaging assembly
  • Skill level 3 - ideal for modellers aged 8 and up
  • Includes four paint schemes to depict different operational units
  • Meticulously detailed casualty compartment true to the original K2/Y design
  • Authentic rear cabin with canvas cover and prominent red cross symbols
  • Faithful reproduction of the durable Austin K30 chassis

History

Renowned as one of the most iconic vehicles of its kind, the Austin K2/Y Ambulance was widely utilised by British and Commonwealth forces during WWII, both in combat zones worldwide and on the home front. Based on the Austin K30 light truck chassis, the casualty compartment was designed in collaboration with the Royal Army Medical Corps, making it exceptionally practical. It could transport either four stretcher-bound patients or ten seated individuals, and its success was largely due to its robustness and dependability, requiring minimal upkeep - essential for an ambulance always ready for action.

The rear cabin was typically made from painted canvas over a wooden frame, with the conspicuous red cross on a white disc prominently displayed on all sides to protect the occupants from enemy fire. After delivering its latest group of casualties to a field station, the K2/Y would promptly return to the combat area, reaching speeds close to 50 mph on open roads.

Some of the most significant military vehicles of WWII lacked large main guns and thick armour, yet they remain fascinating subjects of study. A critical capability on any battlefield is the swift and efficient transport of injured soldiers from the front lines to medical stations further back, where they could receive necessary care and potentially have their lives saved. While any vehicle could theoretically perform this role, a dedicated ambulance often allowed immediate medical attention, making these vehicles arguably the most vital on the battlefield.

Highly favoured by British, Commonwealth, and American troops, the Austin K2/Y was seen as a guardian angel for soldiers. Ideally, they would never need to see the inside of the ambulance, but if they did, 'Katy' would be ready for them. With over 13,000 units produced, they were a common sight on battlefields worldwide, and it is believed that around fifty examples still exist today, some restored to resemble their original wartime appearance.

Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I

Product code: A02069

This 1:72 scale replica of the Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I captures one of the most unique aircraft from WWII. Comprising 70 parts, this Skill Level 1 model is perfect for modellers aged 8 and older, showcasing the distinctive turret fighter design that set the Defiant apart. Once assembled, the model spans 166mm in wingspan and includes components for two different paint schemes, enabling you to depict specific aircraft from the Battle of Britain period.

Key Features

  • 70 piece plastic model kit at 1:72 scale
  • Skill Level 1 - ideal for beginners aged 8 and above
  • Completed wingspan of 166mm
  • Two paint schemes included
  • Features the distinctive four-gun turret
  • Suitable for recreating Battle of Britain aircraft

History

The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the sole 'turret fighter' to be deployed by the RAF. The concept behind the Defiant was that a fighter equipped exclusively with a turret full of machine guns could disrupt bomber formations and also protect itself from enemy fighters.

In its initial encounters during the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Defiant initially surprised enemy pilots and performed well. However, Luftwaffe pilots soon identified its vulnerabilities, particularly the absence of forward-firing guns, leading to its reassignment to night-time operations where it proved more effective.

History

The Westland Wessex HC.2 was a turbine-powered version built under licence, derived from the renowned American Sikorski S-58 'Choctaw' helicopter. It was one of the pioneering helicopters that proved indispensable for numerous military and civilian uses.

Continuing a collaboration between Sikorsky and Westland, the Wessex was first developed for the Royal Navy for anti-submarine and utility missions. It was later adapted as the HC.2 for the Royal Air Force, entering service in 1962, a year after the Navy's version.

In the RAF, these robust helicopters undertook various duties, such as transporting troops and supplies, providing ground support, and conducting air evacuations. However, their role in Air Sea Rescue operations made them particularly prominent at the time.

Upon its introduction, the Wessex was at the forefront of rotary technology, capable of operating in environments inaccessible to other aircraft.

Consolidated B-24H Liberator

Product code: A09010

This remarkable 1:72 scale model kit of the Consolidated B-24H Liberator brings the most manufactured American aircraft of World War Two to your collection. Comprising 278 pieces, it faithfully replicates the iconic features of this renowned heavy bomber, including its shoulder-mounted wings, deep fuselage, and twin-boom tail. With two genuine paint options and a Skill Level 3 difficulty, modellers can recreate the variant that introduced the crucial Emerson A-15 nose turret, which improved the aircraft's defence against frontal assaults.

Key Features

  • 278 plastic components capturing the unique design of the B-24H Liberator
  • 1:72 scale model with a wingspan of 465mm
  • Two genuine paint schemes representing operational aircraft
  • Skill Level 3 - suitable for modellers aged 8 years and above
  • Includes the distinctive Emerson A-15 nose turret of the 'H' variant
  • Detailed depiction of the B-24's unique shoulder-mounted wing setup

History

The second of America's significant four-engined heavy bombers during World War Two, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator was developed after the Army Air Corps requested the company to produce B-17 Flying Fortresses. Dissatisfied with this task, Consolidated suggested they could design and manufacture their own bomber within the same timeframe needed to set up production lines, promising it would surpass the Flying Fortress.

When their XB-24 prototype flew on 29th December 1939, it presented a distinct appearance compared to the B-17 Flying Fortress. With its shoulder-mounted slender wings, deep yet narrow fuselage, and twin-boom tail, it resembled a maritime aircraft. After its introduction to the USAAF in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was mass-produced, serving in every theatre of the Second World War and playing a crucial role in the Allied War effort.

The 'H' model's introduction tackled the aircraft's susceptibility to frontal attacks, a weakness enemy fighter pilots had exploited since the B-24's debut. This version was the first to include an electrically operated Emerson A-15 nose turret and featured approximately 50 other enhancements to boost its combat effectiveness.

This was also the first variant to fully utilise America's mass production capabilities, with claims that Ford could produce Liberators faster than the USAAF could deploy them. The Consolidated B-24 Liberator became the most extensively produced four-engined bomber in warfare history and the most manufactured American aircraft of World War Two. In essence, the B-24 was flown by more personnel, delivered more bombs over longer distances, and destroyed more targets than any other bomber in aviation history.
