History

A truly significant aircraft in aviation history, the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 was derived from the Hawker P.1127 experimental aircraft, designed to explore V/STOL vectored thrust capabilities. These aircraft successfully achieved the transition from hovering to forward flight and back, despite some development aircraft encountering accidents during trials.

The potential of a functional V/STOL aircraft was highly appealing to both the British and US military, prompting further development funding. The new 'Jump Jet' quickly captivated the British public, who were amazed by the ingenuity of their aviation industry, once again demonstrating its global leadership.

As an exceptional performer at displays, the Harrier was consistently a favourite with Airshow audiences, forming a lasting bond that endured throughout its lengthy service career. To the British public, an Airshow felt incomplete without a display from Britain's leading Harrier.

Entering service with the Royal Air Force in April 1969, the Harrier GR.1's operational versatility meant it was never far from potential conflict zones. Not limited to military airfields, Harriers could be hidden in forest clearings, dispersed along motorways, or even in school playgrounds, all with the aim of keeping their location hidden from adversaries.

Many of these early Harriers were stationed in West Germany, serving as a significant deterrent against Eastern Bloc threats, potentially hidden in numerous undisclosed locations, ready to counter Soviet armour at a moment's notice.
