History
Showcasing two iconic British aircraft designs from the 20th century, the Supermarine Spitfire and BAe Hawk, although developed in different periods of aviation history, are both instantly recognisable to many. The Spitfire, Britain's most renowned combat aircraft, is remembered as the plane that defended the nation during the Battle of Britain, with its unique elliptical wing still admired as a design masterpiece. The MkV Spitfire in this set was a more powerful variant used by over 140 RAF Squadrons and nine other countries, including the USSR and the United States.
As the aircraft of the world-renowned Red Arrows, the BAe Hawk has become synonymous with the excellence of the modern Royal Air Force, boasting 44 years of distinguished service, surpassing even the Spitfire's service life. During Battle of Britain anniversary events, enthusiasts have enjoyed watching the Red Arrows' Hawks perform stirring formation flypasts alongside Spitfires and Hurricanes at airshows throughout the summer.
