History
With German military planners managing to skilfully outflank Allied ground forces during the early stages of the Battle of France, what remained of the British Expeditionary Force were ordered to make for the town of Dunkirk and possible evacuation back to Britain. With thousands of troops stranded on the beaches, and others fighting tenaciously to repel advancing German Forces, the scene was set for an Allied military catastrophe, and the very real possibility of Britain being forced out of the war at this early stage.
With hundreds of thousands of troops stranded, German forces inexplicably paused their advance, leaving the Luftwaffe to torment the troops stranded on the beaches, and any Naval vessels sent to support them. As far as the Germans were concerned, the Allies were trapped at Dunkirk and there was nothing they could do about the situation. Time was very much on their side, and they were holding all the cards.
An Allied rescue plan was immediately put into operation, but with the waters being so shallow at Dunkirk, officials thought they might be able to bring around 50,000 troops home at best, however, following a call for as many craft as possible to join the evacuation effort, requisitioned boats and several hundred private craft left all ports along the southeast coast of England, some making multiple journeys across the Strait of Dover, each one determined to bring as many of their boys home as possible. Wrenching a glorious victory from the jaws of a terrible defeat, the ‘Little Ships’ of the ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’ had helped to prevent a military catastrophe and with it, surely provided Britain with her ‘Finest Hour’
Between 26th May and 4th June 1940, ‘Operation Dynamo’ resulted in the rescue of 336,000 British, Commonwealth and Allied troops who had been marooned on the beaches of Dunkirk, a feat which effectively allowed Britain to remain in the war. Now, Britain needed the English Channel to come to its protection like never before, as the threat of invasion was very real, and there was only 21 miles of sea between the south coast of England and an all-conquering enemy.
