Westland Sea King HC.4
Product code: A04056A
This detailed 1:72 scale replica of the Westland Sea King HC.4 'Commando' includes 133 plastic components, providing an engaging project for intermediate modellers. Tailored for amphibious missions and tactical troop deployment, this variant omits the side floats of earlier Sea King models, making it perfect for land operations while maintaining folding rotors and tail for naval use.
Key Features
- 1:72 scale model with 133 plastic parts
- Skill level 2 - suitable for modellers aged 8 and above
- Two authentic paint schemes included
- Folding rotors and tail mechanism can be modelled
- Detailed cockpit and troop compartment interior
- Option to display radar-warning and infrared jamming devices
- Decals for Falklands, Gulf and Afghanistan operational service
History
The 'Commando' variant of the Sea King was specifically designed for amphibious warfare and tactical troop deployment. Initially suggested as a tactical transport for the Egyptian Air Force, it did not require the amphibious features of previous Sea Kings, leading to the removal of side floats. Featuring folding rotors and tail, the Commando was introduced into the Royal Navy as the Sea King HC.4. It was later equipped with radar-warning and infrared jamming systems and could release M130/M147 flares as countermeasures. In addition to transporting troops, it could carry underslung loads up to 2.5 tonnes.
With an extended range and capacity to carry 28 troops, it was perfect for amphibious transport duties. The HC.4 was actively used in conflicts in the Falklands, Balkans, Gulf, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. It frequently undertook missions to evacuate injured personnel and refugees, as well as supporting and preparing for ground operations. It was scheduled for retirement from UK Forces service in March 2016.

de Havilland Chipmunk T.10/T.20
Product code: A04105A
This meticulously crafted 1:48 scale model of the de Havilland Chipmunk T.10/T.20 includes 84 precisely moulded plastic components, enabling enthusiasts to assemble one of three genuine paint schemes. The Chipmunk, an aircraft pivotal in training countless pilots and providing experience flights to many more, succeeded the esteemed Tiger Moth in this crucial role from 1950 onwards. As one of the RAF's longest-serving aircraft, the Chipmunk continues to offer training and currency support for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's pilots.
Key Features
- 84 precision plastic components for an accurate assembly
- 1:48 scale with a wingspan of 217mm
- Includes three genuine paint schemes
- Suitable for modellers aged 8 and up
- Skill level 2 - perfect for developing modellers
History
The de Havilland Chipmunk was introduced in the post-war era as a primary trainer aircraft, designed to modernise pilot instruction across the Commonwealth and beyond. First taking to the skies in May 1946, the Chipmunk was crafted by de Havilland Canada to replace the outdated Tiger Moth, providing enhanced performance, improved visibility, and more modern handling, better equipping student pilots for transitioning to contemporary aircraft.
Equipped with a de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, the Chipmunk featured a sturdy tandem two-seat layout with dual controls, allowing instructors to demonstrate techniques while retaining full control. Its forgiving flight characteristics, coupled with sufficient performance for teaching advanced manoeuvres, made it an ideal training platform for a new generation of aviators.
The Royal Air Force adopted the Chipmunk T.10 in 1950, quickly establishing it as the standard primary trainer across RAF flying training schools. The type served with distinction for over three decades in this role, introducing countless young pilots to the fundamentals of military aviation. The T.20 variant was developed for civilian use, becoming popular for air experience flights, flying clubs, and private owners who appreciated its reliability and classic handling.
Remarkably, the Chipmunk remains in limited RAF service today, with several examples operated by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. These cherished aircraft provide currency training for pilots maintaining their tailwheel endorsements and offer air experience flights to cadets and fortunate members of the public, continuing a training tradition that spans over seven decades.

History
A notable aspect of the Spitfire's enduring legacy is its ability to be adapted and upgraded throughout World War II, with later versions being significantly more advanced than those first introduced at RAF Duxford in the summer of 1938.
The Spitfire was in a state of near-constant development to maintain its position at the forefront of fighter technology during WWII. This crucial work was challenged by the introduction of the Luftwaffe's formidable new Focke Wulf Fw190 in 1941, which outperformed the widely used Spitfire Mk.V at the time.
At that point, the Mk.VIII variant of the Spitfire was in advanced development, but production was delayed due to the absence of manufacturing jigs in factories. The interim solution was the introduction of the hybrid Mk.IX, which proved to be unexpectedly successful and capable of competing with the Focke Wulf.
The Spitfire Mk.VIII was eventually produced as a fighter specifically designed and engineered to be the next iteration of the aircraft and a major production variant. Equipped with the latest Merlin engine variants, the Mk.VIII included a reinforced fuselage, retractable tail wheel, and a new broad-chord rudder, with versions tailored for high, medium, and low altitude missions.
This Spitfire variant mainly operated with units stationed abroad, including the RAF in the Mediterranean, Middle and Far East, and the RAAF in the South West Pacific. Many pilots who flew various marks of this renowned fighter considered the Mk.VIII to be the finest flying Spitfire.
No. 457 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force earned the nickname 'Grey Nurse Squadron' after painting their newly acquired Spitfire Mk.VIIIs with distinctive shark mouths. Initially assigned to defend Darwin, the squadron was soon relocated north to Morotai and later Labuan, primarily for ground attack operations against Japanese forces. The aircraft depicted is that of 457's commanding officer, Sqn. Ldr. Bruce Watson DFC.
